Objective:
Students will read a variety of literature focused on adolescents living through the Depression in order to extend their thinking through the creation of their own “depression journal.”
Standards:
Reading and Writing #6: Students read and recognize literature as a record of human experience.
Reading and Writing #2: Students write and speak for a variety of purposes and audiences.
Activity:
1. All students will have read Out of the Dust. Students will then select a different depression era journal or novel to read. A list of possible choices will be provided.
2. After reading the journal or novel, the students will complete a Venn diagram in order to compare and contrast the main character in Out of the Dust with the main character in their chosen book. Students will be encouraged to look for geographical differences that arose in the stories based on their settings.
3. Students will be asked to create some sort of first-person writing piece (diary, journal, letters). The point of view of the writing piece will be from an adolescent who is living through the Depression. Creativity will be encouraged in this assignment.
